The Meaning of Anointing

Acts 10:38Anointing SeriesSunday Service · Anointed Jesus International Church

Introduction

The word anointing comes from the Hebrew word mashach (מָשַׁח), meaning "to smear or rub with oil." In the Greek New Testament it is chrisma (χρίσμα) — the same root from which we get the name Christ, meaning "The Anointed One." To understand the anointing is to understand the very heart of who Jesus is and what He came to do.

"How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him."

— Acts 10:38 (NKJV)

1. Anointing Is a Divine Appointment

In the Old Testament, anointing was used to set apart kings, priests, and prophets for God's service. When Samuel anointed David, the Spirit of the Lord came upon him from that day forward (1 Samuel 16:13). Anointing was never about the person — it was always about God's sovereign choice and calling.

"The Spirit of the Lord God is upon Me, because the Lord has anointed Me to preach good tidings to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives..."

— Isaiah 61:1 (NKJV)

Jesus read this very passage in the synagogue at Nazareth and declared, "Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing" (Luke 4:21). The anointing on Jesus was not earned — it was given by the Father through the Holy Spirit at His baptism (Matthew 3:16–17).

2. Anointing Brings Power to Serve

Acts 10:38 tells us that Jesus was anointed "with the Holy Spirit and with power." This anointing was not passive — it produced action. Jesus went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed. The anointing is always purposeful. It equips believers to serve, to heal, to preach, and to set the captives free.

"But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and you know all things."

— 1 John 2:20 (NKJV)

Every believer who has received the Holy Spirit carries this anointing. It is not reserved for pastors or leaders alone — it belongs to every child of God. The anointing teaches, guides, and empowers you to walk in the fullness of God's purpose for your life.

3. Anointing Breaks Every Yoke

One of the most powerful truths about the anointing is found in Isaiah 10:27 — "the yoke will be destroyed because of the anointing oil." A yoke is a symbol of bondage, burden, and oppression. The anointing of God is the supernatural force that destroys every yoke of sickness, poverty, fear, and sin.

"It shall come to pass in that day that his burden will be taken away from your shoulder, and his yoke from your neck, and the yoke will be destroyed because of the anointing oil."

— Isaiah 10:27 (NKJV)

When the anointing flows, chains are broken. When the anointing is present, the sick are healed, the oppressed are set free, and the lost are saved. This is why we pursue the presence of God — because where His Spirit is, there is liberty (2 Corinthians 3:17).

4. How to Walk in the Anointing

Walking in the anointing requires surrender, obedience, and a life saturated in prayer and the Word of God. The anointing does not rest on pride or self-sufficiency — it rests on those who are humble and yielded to the Holy Spirit.

  • Zechariah 4:6: "Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit, says the Lord of hosts."
  • Psalm 23:5: "You anoint my head with oil; my cup runs over."
  • James 5:14: "Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord."

Conclusion

The anointing is not a feeling — it is the tangible presence and power of the Holy Spirit working through a surrendered life. Jesus, the Anointed One, has made this same anointing available to every believer. As a church, we are called to carry this anointing into our homes, our communities, and the nations — doing good, healing the broken, and proclaiming the Kingdom of God.

"Now He who establishes us with you in Christ and has anointed us is God, who also has sealed us and given us the Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee."

— 2 Corinthians 1:21–22 (NKJV)

You are anointed. You are appointed. Go and do good — for God is with you.

Who Is Jesus?

John 14:6Identity of Christ SeriesSunday Service · Anointed Jesus International Church

Introduction

Of all the questions ever asked in human history, none is more important than this one: "Who is Jesus?" Your answer to this question determines not only how you live on earth, but where you spend eternity. Jesus Himself asked His disciples, "Who do you say that I am?" (Matthew 16:15). That question still echoes across every generation — and it demands a personal answer.

"Jesus said to him, 'I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.'"

— John 14:6 (NKJV)

1. Jesus Is the Son of God

Jesus is not merely a great teacher, a prophet, or a moral example. He is the eternal Son of God — fully divine and fully human. At His baptism, the Father declared from heaven: "This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased" (Matthew 3:17). The Apostle John opens his Gospel with one of the most profound statements in all of Scripture:

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God... And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth."

— John 1:1, 14 (NKJV)

Jesus did not begin at Bethlehem. He is eternal — existing before creation, present at creation, and the very agent through whom all things were made (Colossians 1:16). He stepped out of eternity into time, clothed Himself in human flesh, and walked among us so that we could know God personally.

2. Jesus Is the Saviour of the World

The name Jesus (Yeshua in Hebrew) literally means "God saves." He did not come to condemn the world — He came to save it. Every human being is separated from God by sin, and no amount of good works, religion, or self-effort can bridge that gap. But Jesus, the sinless Son of God, took our sin upon Himself on the cross and paid the price we could never pay.

"For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life."

— John 3:16 (NKJV)

The cross was not a tragedy — it was the greatest act of love in all of history. And the resurrection was God's declaration that death has been defeated. "He is not here; He is risen!" (Luke 24:6). Because Jesus rose from the dead, everyone who believes in Him has the promise of eternal life.

3. Jesus Is Lord Over All

After His resurrection, Jesus declared: "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth" (Matthew 28:18). He is not just Saviour — He is Lord. He rules over sickness, over demons, over death, over nature, and over every power and principality. There is no situation in your life that is beyond His authority.

"Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow... and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord."

— Philippians 2:9–11 (NKJV)

4. Jesus Is Our Living High Priest and Intercessor

Jesus did not simply die, rise, and disappear. He ascended to the right hand of the Father where He lives today — interceding for you and me. He is not a distant God who does not understand our struggles. He was tempted in every way as we are, yet without sin. He knows your pain, your weakness, and your need.

  • Hebrews 4:15–16: "For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need."
  • Romans 8:34: "It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us."
  • Revelation 1:17–18: "Do not be afraid; I am the First and the Last. I am He who lives, and was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore. Amen. And I have the keys of Hades and of Death."

Conclusion

Jesus is the Son of God, the Saviour of the world, the Lord of all, and your living High Priest. He is not a historical figure locked in the past — He is alive today, and He is calling you by name. The question He asked His disciples is the same question He asks you today: "Who do you say that I am?"

"Simon Peter answered and said, 'You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.'"

— Matthew 16:16 (NKJV)

May that same confession rise from your heart today — Jesus is Lord, Jesus is Saviour, and Jesus is alive!

Sermon 3

The Importance of the Holy Spirit

John 16:13Holy Spirit SeriesSunday Service · Anointed Jesus International Church

Introduction

The Holy Spirit is not a force, an energy, or a feeling. He is the third Person of the Holy Trinity — fully God, co-equal and co-eternal with the Father and the Son. Yet He is perhaps the most misunderstood and neglected Person of the Godhead. Jesus said it was actually better for us that He go away, so that the Holy Spirit could come (John 16:7). That tells us everything — the Holy Spirit is not a lesser gift. He is God living inside of us.

"However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come."

— John 16:13 (NKJV)

1. The Holy Spirit Is the Promise of the Father

Before Jesus ascended to heaven, He gave His disciples a command and a promise: "Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised" (Acts 1:4). The outpouring of the Holy Spirit was not an afterthought — it was the Father's plan from the beginning. On the Day of Pentecost, the promise was fulfilled with fire, wind, and power (Acts 2:1–4).

"But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth."

— Acts 1:8 (NKJV)

This promise is not only for the disciples of the first century. Peter declared on the Day of Pentecost: "The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off — for all whom the Lord our God will call" (Acts 2:39). The Holy Spirit is God's gift to every believer in every generation.

2. The Holy Spirit Transforms Us From the Inside

One of the most important works of the Holy Spirit is transformation. He does not simply help us behave better — He changes who we are from the inside out. When we are born again, the Holy Spirit comes to live within us, making our bodies His temple (1 Corinthians 6:19). He convicts us of sin, leads us into righteousness, and produces the fruit of God's character in our lives.

"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law."

— Galatians 5:22–23 (NKJV)

This fruit is not produced by human effort — it is the natural overflow of a life surrendered to the Holy Spirit. The more we yield to Him, the more we look like Jesus. The Holy Spirit is the agent of sanctification — He is making us holy, day by day, from glory to glory (2 Corinthians 3:18).

3. The Holy Spirit Empowers Us for Ministry

The Holy Spirit does not only transform us privately — He equips us publicly for the work of the Kingdom. He distributes spiritual gifts to every believer according to His will, so that the body of Christ may be built up and the world may be reached with the Gospel.

"There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord. And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all."

— 1 Corinthians 12:4–6 (NKJV)

Gifts of healing, prophecy, tongues, wisdom, knowledge, faith — these are not relics of the past. They are the tools the Holy Spirit gives to the Church today to demonstrate the power of God and advance His Kingdom. We are not meant to serve God in our own strength — we are meant to serve in the power of the Spirit.

4. The Holy Spirit Is Our Comforter and Guide

Jesus called the Holy Spirit the Paraclete — the One called alongside to help. He is our Comforter in grief, our Counsellor in confusion, our Strength in weakness, and our Guide in every decision. He intercedes for us when we do not know how to pray, and He leads us into the perfect will of God.

  • Romans 8:26: "Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered."
  • Romans 8:14: "For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God."
  • John 14:26: "But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you."
  • Ephesians 5:18: "And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit."

Conclusion

The Holy Spirit is not optional for the Christian life — He is essential. Without Him, we cannot be saved, we cannot be transformed, we cannot serve effectively, and we cannot know the deep things of God. He is the Spirit of truth, the Spirit of power, the Spirit of holiness, and the Spirit of love. Open your heart to Him fully — do not grieve Him, do not quench Him, but be filled with Him daily.

"Do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God's."

— 1 Corinthians 6:19–20 (NKJV)

You are the temple of the Holy Spirit. Let Him fill every room of your life — and watch God move in ways beyond what you could ask or imagine.

The Call to Discipleship: Following Jesus with Your Whole Life

Matthew 28:19–20Discipleship SeriesSunday Service · Anointed Jesus International Church

Introduction

The last words a person speaks before they leave are always the most important. Before Jesus ascended to heaven, He did not give His disciples a suggestion — He gave them a commission. He called them, and He calls us today, to one of the most profound and life-defining journeys a human being can undertake: discipleship. To be a disciple is not simply to believe in Jesus — it is to follow Him, to learn from Him, to be transformed by Him, and to reproduce His life in others.

The word disciple comes from the Latin discipulus, meaning "learner" or "student." But biblical discipleship goes far deeper than classroom learning. It is a whole-life apprenticeship — walking with Jesus in every area of your existence: your thoughts, your relationships, your finances, your ambitions, your suffering, and your service.

"Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age."

— Matthew 28:19–20 (NKJV)

1. Discipleship Begins with a Personal Call

Discipleship does not begin with a programme or a curriculum — it begins with a personal encounter with Jesus. When Jesus called His first disciples, He did not hand them a syllabus. He simply said two words: "Follow Me" (Matthew 4:19). And they left everything — their nets, their boats, their livelihoods — and followed Him.

This is the nature of the call. It is personal, it is urgent, and it demands a response. Jesus does not call us to follow a religion or a set of rules — He calls us to follow Him. Discipleship is relational at its core. It is built on a living, daily, growing relationship with the person of Jesus Christ through the Holy Spirit and the Word of God.

"Then He said to them all, 'If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me.'"

— Luke 9:23 (NKJV)

Notice the three conditions Jesus sets: deny yourself, take up your cross daily, and follow Me. Discipleship is not a one-time decision — it is a daily choice. Every morning you wake up, you choose again to lay down your agenda and pick up His. This is the narrow road, and it leads to life (Matthew 7:14).

2. Discipleship Is Rooted in the Word of God

You cannot follow someone you do not know. And you cannot know Jesus apart from His Word. The Bible is not merely a religious book — it is the living, breathing voice of God (Hebrews 4:12). Every disciple must be a person of the Word. Jesus said that if we abide in His Word, we are truly His disciples — and the truth will set us free (John 8:31–32).

"All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work."

— 2 Timothy 3:16–17 (NKJV)

The Word of God is the disciple's food (Matthew 4:4), their lamp (Psalm 119:105), their sword (Ephesians 6:17), and their mirror (James 1:23–25). A disciple who neglects the Word will grow weak, confused, and vulnerable to deception. But a disciple who meditates on the Word day and night will be like a tree planted by rivers of water — fruitful in every season (Psalm 1:2–3).

Discipleship in the Word is not passive reading — it is active obedience. Jesus said, "If you love Me, keep My commandments" (John 14:15). The goal of studying Scripture is not information — it is transformation. We read to be changed, not merely to be informed.

3. Discipleship Is Shaped by Prayer

If the Word is the voice of God speaking to us, then prayer is our voice speaking to God. Every disciple must be a person of prayer. Jesus Himself — the Son of God — made prayer the foundation of His ministry. He prayed before major decisions (Luke 6:12), He prayed in the garden of Gethsemane (Luke 22:41–44), He prayed for His disciples (John 17), and He taught them to pray (Matthew 6:9–13).

"Pray without ceasing."

— 1 Thessalonians 5:17 (NKJV)

Prayer is not a religious duty — it is a lifeline. It is the breath of the disciple's soul. Through prayer, we receive direction, strength, peace, and intimacy with God. Through prayer, we intercede for others, we do warfare against the enemy, and we align our will with the will of the Father. A prayerless disciple is a powerless disciple. But a disciple who prays without ceasing walks in the fullness of God's power and presence.

4. Discipleship Is Lived in Community

Jesus did not call His disciples to follow Him alone — He called them into a community. He chose twelve to be with Him (Mark 3:14). The early church was not a collection of isolated believers — it was a vibrant, interdependent body of people who devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching, to fellowship, to breaking of bread, and to prayer (Acts 2:42).

"And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching."

— Hebrews 10:24–25 (NKJV)

You cannot grow into full maturity as a disciple in isolation. You need brothers and sisters who will speak truth into your life, who will pray with you, who will carry your burdens, and who will hold you accountable. The church is not a building — it is a family. And every disciple needs to be deeply rooted in a local church family where they are known, loved, and challenged to grow.

Community also means accountability. Proverbs 27:17 says, "As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another." Find a spiritual mentor — someone further along in the faith who can pour into your life. And in turn, pour into someone younger in the faith. This is the chain of discipleship that Jesus modelled and commanded.

5. Discipleship Produces Fruit and Reproduces Itself

The ultimate mark of a true disciple is fruit — and the ultimate fruit of discipleship is making more disciples. Jesus said, "By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples" (John 15:8). A disciple who never makes another disciple has stopped the chain that Jesus started.

"And the things that you have heard from me among many witnesses, commit these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also."

— 2 Timothy 2:2 (NKJV)

Paul passed what he received from Jesus to Timothy. Timothy was to pass it to faithful men. Those faithful men were to teach others also. Four generations of discipleship in one verse. This is the multiplication model of the Kingdom — not addition, but multiplication. Every disciple is called to make disciples.

Fruit also includes the character of Christ being formed in you. Galatians 4:19 says Paul travailed in birth until Christ was formed in the Galatians. The goal of discipleship is not church attendance or Bible knowledge alone — it is Christlikeness. It is becoming more and more like Jesus in your character, your compassion, your courage, and your love.

The Seven Marks of a True Disciple

  • John 8:31: "Abides in the Word — "If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed.""
  • John 13:35: "Loves other believers — "By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.""
  • Luke 9:23: "Carries the cross daily — "Let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me.""
  • John 15:8: "Bears much fruit — "By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples.""
  • Luke 14:33: "Surrenders all — "Whoever of you does not forsake all that he has cannot be My disciple.""
  • Matthew 28:19: "Makes disciples — "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations.""
  • John 15:5: "Abides in Christ — "I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.""

Conclusion

Discipleship is the heartbeat of the Christian life. It is not a programme for the spiritually advanced — it is the normal, expected life of every believer. Jesus did not say, "Go and make converts." He said, "Go and make disciples." There is a profound difference. A convert believes. A disciple follows, learns, obeys, grows, and reproduces.

The world is waiting for disciples who look like Jesus — who love like He loved, who serve like He served, who pray like He prayed, and who sacrifice like He sacrificed. The Great Commission is not complete until every nation, every tribe, every tongue has been reached with the Gospel and discipled in the ways of the Kingdom.

"A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone who is perfectly trained will be like his teacher."

— Luke 6:40 (NKJV)

The goal of discipleship is simple and glorious: to become like Jesus. Start today. Follow Him with your whole life — and take someone with you.
